After leaving his position as Brighton’s manager at the end of the 2023–2024 campaign, Roberto De Zerbi is expected to return to management soon.
Following their season-ending match against Manchester United, De Zerbi, 45, left Brighton having come to a “mutual agreement” with the Premier League team.
De Zerbi, a former head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk, initially signed a four-year contract with the Seagulls in September 2022.
In the 2022–2023 season, he led the squad to a sixth-place result, marking the club’s highest–ever top-flight position and its first-ever European qualifying.
However, they discovered that the previous season was considerably more difficult, as De Zerbi’s team finished 11th despite a campaign marred by player injuries.
After leaving Brighton, De Zerbi was connected to a number of elite Premier League teams, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool.
Rather than selecting a manager, Liverpool chose to choose Arne Slot as their first-ever head coach, and Chelsea appointed former Leicester manager Enzo Maresca to succeed Mauricio Pochettino.
According to reports, De Zerbi had discussions with United to take over as manager in place of Erik ten Hag, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe has chosen to stick with the Dutchman for an additional campaign.
De Zerbi has few choices if he wants to stay in English football after that ruling.
Almost immediately, De Zerbi will return to managing overseas, instead of holding out for a chance to manage in the Premier League.
It is said that he will soon be named Marseille’s new manager.
According to Italian journalist Michele Criscitiello, De Zerbi and the French club are “very close” to reaching an agreement.
“Roberto De Zerbi’s surprise wedding: Marseille has accelerated for the former Brighton manager, who views playing in Ligue 1 as a step up in his career. Really near,” he wrote on X.
Speaking last month following his departure from Brighton, De Zerbi expressed uncertainty about his future plans.
Regarding his Brighton departure, he told the BBC, “We didn’t find the agreement to move on.”
“I’d like to maintain my path. I am completely aware of my goals and understand that, as a coach, I must abide by the club’s rules.
“They offered me a fantastic opportunity. They allow me to play in the Europa League, work in the Premier League, and get to know amazing individuals.
I will always be grateful to them for giving me the chance to get to know this team, this city, and these supporters.”
