Intent to sign Matteo Guendouzi is underway at Aston Villa, according to sources.

Matteo Guendouzi’s summer transfer to Aston Villa is reportedly underway, according to sources who spoke with Football Insider.

Having signed the France international in 2018 while managing Arsenal, Unai Emery has a great deal of respect for the player.

According to sources, the Villa manager has personally discussed Guendouzi’s potential transfer to the Premier League team when the transfer window reopens.

In January 2023, a deal between the 25-year-old and Villa Park was rumored to be close, but it fell through, and he ultimately joined Lazio the following summer on a season-long loan from Marseille.

Villa has Guendouzi on their short list of possible center midfield targets because his French contract is slated to expire in June 2025.

At Aston Villa, Matteo Guendouzi may eventually take Douglas Luiz’s place.

Since acquiring Guendouzi for Arsenal six years ago for £7 million from Loreint, Emery has been a longtime admirer of the player.

After Emery was fired in November 2019, the Frenchman made 82 appearances for the Emirates but failed to leave a lasting impression before moving to Marseille in 2021.

Lazio signed the midfield player on loan last summer after he established himself as a regular starter for the Ligue 1 team. The contract included an obligation-to-buy provision, if certain requirements were fulfilled.

Guendouzi made 36 starts for the Serie A team in his 46 outings last season, but a permanent move to the Italian capital is allegedly in question following the departure of manager Igor Tudor.

In an effort to bolster his team ahead of their Champions League run the following season, Emery has now initiated first negotiations with Villa about acquiring the midfield player.

Guendouzi may be considered as a possible Douglas Luiz substitute after it was disclosed by Football Insider that the Brazilian and Juventus had signed a preliminary agreement.
