Tottenham to release record signing flop on free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur intend to release record signing Tanguy Ndombele from his contract this summer, according to sources.

The France international joined Spurs in 2019 for a record £55.45 million, as the club sought to build on its success under former manager Mauricio Pochettino after winning the Champions League final earlier that year.

However, the midfielder was unable to impress Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte in subsequent seasons in north London, with concerns raised about his work rate, fitness level, and injury history.

After 63 Premier League games with Tottenham, Ndombele returned to previous club Lyon on loan for the second half of the 2021/22 season. He has since won league titles with Napoli and Galatasaray.

Spurs want to terminate his contract, which has one year remaining, and allow him to leave on a free transfer, according to reports, including The Independent.

Tottenham’s first-team central midfielders include Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, and Rodrigo Bentancur. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp have been linked with exits as Ange Postecoglou looks to put his stamp on the squad during his second summer transfer window in charge.

Spurs are reportedly interested in signing Shakhtar Donestk midfielder Georgiy Sudakov, who has expressed a desire to play in the Premier League in the future.

They are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who may leave Stamford Bridge this summer. However, Aston Villa may also be interested.

The north London club has signed Timo Werner on a loan deal for the 2024/25 season. He previously scored twice and assisted three times in 13 Premier League games.
