First summer signing will tell us two things about Birmingham City in League One

With Chris Davies taking over as manager, Birmingham City may now move forward with their transfer intentions.

Birmingham City’s hiring process has commenced with the appointment of Chris Davies as manager.

In the three days since Davies signed, more players have been connected to the team than in the three weeks before his arrival. Not that any of these players will visit Blues, but the commotion does typically indicate that inquiries and phone calls are being made.

After being demoted to League One, Blues are facing a massive rebuild. It is safe to assume that the ten players who have already left the club will be followed out the door.

It presents an exciting chance for Davies and the club’s recruitment team to enhance the manager’s reputation. CEO Garry Cook stated, “Known for his excellent man management skills, he will now focus on building a Championship ready squad in League One,” upon announcing Davies’ appointment.

That that is a bold statement. With the largest budget in League One, Blues anticipates winning promotion on their first try. But practically speaking, what kind of player can they hope to draw in? The Blues’ first acquisition ought to reveal a lot.

It will reveal to us their level of ambition. Do they intend to fight it out in League One for Championship players? In order to do that, they will have to pay players at least Championship-level wages, if not more to get them to move down a division.

For example, how do you persuade Scott Twine, who is one of the players being connected to the team, to put League One teams’ lures aside for a season? If money isn’t the driving force, which it isn’t for everyone, then “the project” will have to shoulder a significant portion of the workload.

The ambition of the Blues will attract players. Knighthead’s investment will make St Andrew’s the greatest stadium in League One for the upcoming season by a significant margin. A new stadium and a “Sports Quarter” are also promised.

The Blues have a coach in Davies who has experience coaching at teams like Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. You can see why the Blues could be a more alluring option than certain Championship clubs when you include in the seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.

You have to combine your pulling strength with that ambition. Although the Blues appear to have both, only time will tell if players of championship calibre feel the same way.
