Report: Mauricio Pochettino only signed Tanguy Ndombele because Tottenham couldn’t get £65m

Tanguy Ndombele is currently a Tottenham Hotspur player.

For some years, it has been evident that the Frenchman has no place at Tottenham. He is surplus to requirements, but the North Londoners have been unable to locate a buyer for him.

Tottenham made the error of signing Ndombele because they were unable to secure Mauricio Pochettino’s top target for 2019.

Frenkie De Jong is the reason why Tottenham signed Tanguy Ndombele

Tottenham reached the Champions League final in 2019, and Pochettino expected support from Daniel Levy during the summer transfer window.

Spurs’ roster was in desperate need of reinforcements at the time. They needed new players to advance to the next level, and Pochettino had a few candidates in mind.

One of them was then-Ajax star, Frenkie De Jong.

According to Football London, Tottenham kept an eye on the Dutch midfielder during the first half of the 2018/19 season and made him their top midfield target.

Just as they were about to make a bid for De Jong, Barcelona swooped in. In January 2019, the Catalan giants reached an agreement with Ajax to purchase the midfielder for £65 million. The transaction went through the following summer.

Tottenham missed out on their top target, so Pochettino and Spurs’ technical director Steve Hitchen decided to pursue the next name on their list.

Ndombele signed from Lyon for a club-record cost of £63 million (Sky Sports).

De Jong has been a big success at Barcelona since then, and we all know what happened to Ndombele at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham missed out on two other superstars in 2019

Tottenham spent well in 2019, but it was still a dismal window for the club.

Spurs’ two major additions, Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, have underperformed in their current roles.

It has now been revealed that Tottenham favoured De Jong over Ndombele. According to the same article, Lo Celso was not the first choice target.

Tottenham attempted to recruit two other players before signing Argentine: Bruno Fernandes and Paulo Dybala.

For various reasons, the trades fell through, and Spurs were forced to settle for Lo Celso.
