Owners of Manchester United will sell their sister club after fearing a UEFA suspension.

A report claims that INEOS, the minority owners of Manchester United, has agreed with UEFA to sell Nice, a French club.

The founder, chair and CEO of INEOS, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, acquired a 27% share in United earlier this year. He has also controlled Nice for the previous five years.

But UEFA has begun to investigate this conflict of interest. Although both United and Nice are scheduled to participate in the Europa League the next season, the regulations of each league prohibit two teams owned by the same people from competing in the same European competition.

Ratcliffe has been allowed a season to leave one of the teams he is associated with, even if his interest in United matches UEFA’s 30% standard.

According to the Independent newspaper, he has made the decision to sell Nice. Additionally, Ratcliffe reportedly wants to concentrate more on his work at United, the team he grew up cheering for.

The inability of French football to clinch a TV rights contract for the 2024–2025 season is a roadblock in the sale of Nice, although there is hope that the club’s Mediterranean setting will prove beneficial when trying to find a buyer.

A number of Nice players have been linked to departures as Ligue 1 is expected to forfeit half of its previous €1 billion in television revenue. United has long been interested in Jean-Clair Todibo, while goalkeeper Marcin Bulka and midfielder Khephren Thuram are two more players who are expected to depart the Allianz Riviera.

Meanwhile, United continues to discuss manager Erik ten Hag’s future. He was supposed to be fired following the FA Cup final, but after unexpectedly defeating Manchester City, he is still employed, and the club has not yet decided whether to let him leave.
