Garden Party: How the Celtics slowed the Mavericks…

👋 What do you mean there’s no game tonight?

After nine days of waiting for the Finals, another three-day wait for Game 2 seems interminable.

On the bright side, the extra time gives us a chance to dive a little deeper on Boston’s Game 1 win (and gives walking miracle Al Horford an extra day of rest for those old bones).

Khari Thompson broke down how the Celtics slowed down a potent Mavericks offense, becoming the first team to hold Dallas under 90 points in the postseason (and just the fifth all year) in Thursday’s win.

, dipping 5 percent from last year with the lowest ratings (outside of the Covid-affected 2020 and 2021 seasons) since 2008. This feels like an appropriate time to complain about the gap between the conference finals and Finals again.

  • 🏀 Boy, did the Celtics target Mavericks star Luka Doncic in Game 1. Few people have a higher opinion of Doncic than me, but this compilation from Eric Shapiro on Twitter really highlighted how much Boston hunted Dallas’s offensive engine on the other end.
  • 🏒 Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Oilers and Panthers is tonight. Edmonton is seeking its first title since 1990, while Florida looks to lift its first Cup.
  • 🏒 Everyone knows that the Sharks will take BU freshman phenom Macklin Celebrini with the first pick of the NHL Draft later this month. But might he return for another season on Comm Ave? He seemed to suggest this week that it’s possible.Globe reporters Adam Himmelsbach and Khari Thompson joined Mike Curtis and Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning News for an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit on Friday, fielding questions on Jayson Tatum’s performance, the Mavericks’ offensive approach, and plenty more.

Here’s one of my favorite exchanges.

Adam: Good question. Transcribing quotes after games really stinks, particularly when I have about 45 minutes to write my story before my deadline hits. It’s just so time consuming. But during the Finals the NBA hires a transcription service to handle all of that! Thank you, NBA!

But the access is generally worse, just because there are so many journalists and outlets pulling players in so many different directions. If I’m at a road game in Sacramento in January, I can pretty much get a one-on-one interview with whoever I want. Not in the Finals.
