Report: Leicester City consider manager who saw his 12-year record broken by Jamie Vardy in 2015

According to recent reports, Leicester City’s hunt for a new manager may take an unexpected turn.

Leicester City are looking for a new manager after Enzo Maresca left to lead Chelsea, despite their promotion.

West Brom’s Carlos Corberan was initially the leading prospect, but the Baggies’ compensation demands appear to have pushed him out of the Foxes’ hierarchy.

Leicester are reportedly interested in signing a Manchester United icon, following links to Steve Cooper, Graham Potter, and former Chelsea manager Mauricio Sarri.

Ruud van Nistelrooy one name ‘proposed’ for Leicester job

Leicester City are considering a shortlist of three or four management candidates, as reported by The Daily Mail.

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards is said to have admirers at the King Power Stadium, while former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is a more unusual name being examined.

According to the Daily Mail, “Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has not worked since leaving PSV Eindhoven, is another name proposed to the Leicester board, which approached Graham Potter in spring 2023 after sacking Brendan Rodgers.”

This would be a significant risk for Leicester, given that the Dutchman has only managed one senior side, PSV, and his stint was only one season.

Van Nistelrooy did win the Dutch Cup in his one year in command, but he left under the cloud of allegations about a player mutiny.

If van Nistelrooy is selected as Leicester manager, he might coach Jamie Vardy, who recently shattered his Premier League scoring record.

Vardy, a former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, is in talks with the club to extend his contract once it expires this summer. Working alongside him may be appealing, even at the age of 37.

Vardy scored in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United in 2015, extending his goal-scoring streak to 11 games and breaking Van Nistelrooy’s record set over two seasons in 2003.

This run was part of Leicester’s Cinderella season, in which they defied all odds to win the Premier League title.

This time around, however, the goal is simply to remain in the division.
