“Most unexciting appointment” – Sunderland warned against move for Scottish Premiership manager
According to reports, Stephen Robinson, the manager of St Mirren, is being considered for the Sunderland position.
For Sunderland in the Championship, it was a poor season, and the Black Cats have had a difficult start to the summer.
After Michael Beale was fired in February, Sunderland was left without a manager, and it has already been more than a year since they started looking for a long-term replacement.
With Beale out of the picture, Mike Dodds took over as temporary manager until the conclusion of the season. However, he was unable to turn around the Black Cats’ poor performance, and they ended the season in 16th place in the league, six points above the relegation zone.
Alex Neil, Marek Papszun, Steve Cooper, Will Still, Roy Keane, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, Scott Parker, Danny Rohl, Jermain Defoe, Rene Maric, Liam Rosenior, Paul Heckingbottom, and Bo Svensson are just a few of the names that have been linked to the Sunderland position in recent months, but it doesn’t appear that they are any closer to scheduling an appointment.
Sunderland manager seeking most recent
Last week, the Black Cats were dealt a severe blow when former Reims manager Still, who was reportedly a long-term target of the team, turned down the position because of uncertainty about the amount of support he would have and the composition of his backroom staff. Still will now stay in France with Lens.
Journalist Alan Nixon claims that Sunderland has now created a shortlist of three players. Rohl is likewise out of the running after agreeing to a new long-term contract with Sheffield Wednesday. Svensson has been named the next head coach of Bundesliga team Union Berlin.
Stephen Robinson of St Mirren, Stockport County manager Dave Challinor, and former AZ Alkmaar manager Pascal Jansen all rumored to be in the running for the position.
As he is “being pushed within the Sunderland ranks” and is apparently “keen” to take over at the Stadium of Light, Robinson would be a cheap option for the Black Cats given his relatively low £250,000 compensation cost.
The 49-year-old has been leading St Mirren to a fifth-place finish in the Scottish Premiership this season, and he has done a fantastic job since taking over in February 2022. However, his stints managing in English football with Oldham Athetic and Morecambe were less successful.

Stephen Robinson’s possible appointment as Sunderland’s fan commentator
Analyst Jack Austwicke, a Sunderland supporter, feels that Robinson would be a lackluster addition for the Black Cats and would prefer that the team sign Challinor.
“I think Stephen Robinson would be the least ambitious, most unexciting appointment we could possibly make,” Jack stated.
Though Sunderland AFC is capable of better, I’m not one to write off managers before even giving them a chance.
“It is imperative that we do so; failing to do so would be absurd, in my opinion.
“I would like Dave Challinor, even if his name has been floated.
“As a Hartlepool native, I’ve watched a lot of Dave Challinor games, and while I think he’s a terrific manager, it’s debatable if he’s ready for the Championship.
“I’m not going to claim I’ve seen Robinson manage much, but it would feel like a bit of a pathetic appointment really.”
