‘He wants to stay’ – Club director dismisses Aston Villa transfer claim

Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio has stated that rumoured Aston Villa target Denzel Dumfries wishes to remain at the San Siro, but with one year remaining on his contract, the club will not take any chances.

Unai Emery is interested in adding talent and experience to his side to compete in both the Premier League and Champions League next season. He has shown respect for Dutch international Dumfries. He is a Serie A winner and two-time Italian Cup champion, making him an ideal fit for Villa.

However, new information has emerged, and it does not bode well for those who hoped his move to Villa Park would be completed this summer. Ausilio told Sky Sports Italia that conversations indicate Dumfries’ wish to stay put.

“I spoke with him recently, and aside from the contract situation which we will verify over the next few days, he confirmed to me that he wants to stay,” said the director. “If any opportunities should arise, we will evaluate them, but as of today he is an Inter player and he confirmed to me that he wants to remain.”

The Italian media regarded Villa as the frontrunners for the full-back’s signature if he left Serie A, however others such as Manchester United are claimed to have remained in the running. But ultimately, his renewal at Inter would come as part of a bigger objective to maintain stability at the top of Serie A.

“The idea is to have consistency, as it will be the fourth year with Simone Inzaghi as coach,” Ausilio said. “Our football philosophy is simple: we want to be competitive and maintain our standing.

“The team is already strong as it is, if there are some opportunities then we will be there, otherwise we are ready for the start of the season.”

Dumfries is presently a member of the Dutch national team, which is preparing for the European Championships in Germany this summer, so his attention has been taken away from his future at club level.
