Chris Davies Takes the Helm

Birmingham City made a big move when they hired Chris Davies, the assistant coach of Tottenham Hotspur, as their new manager for a four-year contract. After Tony Mowbray left the position, Davies—who had extensive experience playing for Swansea City, Liverpool, Celtic, and Leicester City—took over as manager. Spurs agreed on a compensation arrangement with the newly relegated League One team, as Davies had two years left on his contract.

Chris Davies is eager to begin his tenure at Birmingham City. He stated, “As soon as I spoke with Tom, Garry, Tom Brady, and other board members, it was clear to me how passionate and committed the football leadership team are to bringing success to this club. I will give everything to build an attacking team that reflects this great city, and most importantly, to produce a team that our supporters can be proud of.”

A Tumultuous Period for Birmingham

The recent past of Birmingham City has been characterised by volatility. Seven different managers have led St Andrew’s since Knighthead, the American owners, took over ten months ago. John Eustace started the 2023–24 season, but Wayne Rooney took his position in the first few games of October. Rooney’s time was brief because of subpar work, which resulted in his January removal.

After Rooney left, Academy head coach Steve Spooner filled in for a while before Tony Mowbray was hired. After a strong beginning, Mowbray was forced to take a sick leave, and Mark Venus took over. But Venus also took a leave of absence, so Gary Rowett was in charge of the last eight games. Birmingham was demoted in spite of these efforts; this is only the third time in the club’s history that it has fallen to the third division.

From Promising Player to Respected Coach

Chris Davies’ football career started at Reading, where he was a standout player who captained the young teams and won caps for Wales up to the under-19 division. But at 19, an arthritic condition put an end to his playing career, which led him to go into teaching. Throughout his career, he has worked at junior sessions, vacation camps, and abroad in the US and New Zealand.

After introducing Davies to coaching at Swansea, Rodgers went on to collaborate with him at Liverpool, Celtic, and Leicester. Significant success resulted from their collaboration, including back-to-back doubles in Scotland and an FA Cup triumph with Leicester. Davies’s qualifications are further strengthened by his recent experience playing for Tottenham Hotspur under Ange Postecoglou.
