Aquatics Centre and Portman Road plans officially submitted

Official plans for the significant reconstruction project at Portman Road, which includes the construction of a new swimming complex, have been delivered to the planning committee of the council.

Since late 2022, the Ipswich Borough Council has been developing its materplan plans.

An outline planning application has been submitted for the masterplan surrounding the aquatic centre, which includes the possibility of a new hotel on a development plot, while a full planning application has been submitted for the aquatic centre.

In 2006, the idea was first floated to construct a new swimming complex on the location of the old cattle market.

The borough executives reviewed the masterplan in March of this year before making additional adjustments and submitting the official blueprints, which were submitted this week.

A new facility with eight lanes, a 25-meter swimming pool, spectator seating, a learner pool, a spin studio, two workout studios, and a fitness suite will be built as part of the project.

In addition, soft play, a café, and outdoor public spaces will be available.

Plans for the related access work and parking have also been presented; a new multi-story parking structure is being suggested.

There is now a brand-new walkway that connects the east and west of the property.

The advantages for the Ipswich Town Football Club and the reconstruction of the Cobbold Stand on the eastern side of the stadium are also mentioned in the renovation plans.

The plans read as follows: “The club’s strategic roadmap is intimately integrated with the proposed capacity increase and redevelopment of the Cobbold Stand.

“This cohesive approach to urban regeneration underscores a concerted effort to revitalise the Ipswich town centre.”

In 2006, there were initial plans to construct a new swimming complex in Ipswich; however, these plans were later scrapped.

The recently 40-year-old Crown Pools would be replaced by the new aquatic complex.

“This project is set to become a community jewel, a beacon of how sports, leisure, and communal well-being are valued in Ipswich,” said Neil MacDonald, the leader of the Ipswich Borough Council.

Together, we are creating more than simply infrastructure—we are creating opportunities for optimism and a legacy of shared well-being.
