After Tosin: Chelsea eye PL “monster” who’s the “closest thing” to Drogba

The Chelsea target could be an alternative to Benjamin Sesko.

Enzo Maresca will take over as Chelsea’s manager in the dugout for the 2024–2025 season.

At Stamford Bridge, though, the Italian won’t be the only new face; Todd Boehly is eager to bolster his team.

The first player the Blues signed this summer was Tosin Adarabioyo, and it appears that the team will make its second purchase at the other end of the pitch.

In light of this, let’s examine a Chelsea target who has the potential to succeed Didier Drogba by providing both a Benjamin Sesko substitute and an alternative.

Chelsea’s search for a new striker

The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea is considering a summer transfer for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Blues are reportedly “monitoring developments” at the moment as they try to strengthen their offence.

With only one year remaining on his current contract, the Everton striker may be acquired for a reduced price should he decide to pursue a new contract; prior rumours have suggested a price of approximately £40 million.

He would therefore be less expensive than a top target like Sesko, who has a £56 million release clause.

Why Calvert-Lewin could be Chelsea’s next Drogba

For all eternity, Drogba will be remembered as a legend at Chelsea because of the trophies and boundless happiness his goals provided.

With 164 goals and 88 assists in 381 games for the team, the Ivorian will always be regarded as an iconic player by many.

But because he’s a “battering ram centre forward,” Calvert-Lewin might be the “closest thing” Chelsea can sign to Drogba, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Everton striker started 26 Premier League games, scored seven goals, and provided two assists in a largely injury-free 2023–24 season.

DCL vs Sesko vs Jackson 23/24 League Stats
Stats (per game) DCL Sesko Jackson

It’s safe to say that Calvert-Lewin is a real pain to play against when healthy and confident.

He is a very athletic and physically strong centre forward who mostly acts as a target man and has outstanding movement, much like Drogba.
