Nottingham Forest want to sign £26m player compared to N’Golo Kante and his club are happy to sell

A player whose club is willing to let him go is being likened to N’Golo Kante, and Nottingham Forest is now eager to sign him.

After winning the Premier League for three straight seasons, Evangelo Marinakis wants to strengthen Nuno Espirito Santo’s team in order to stave off another relegation struggle.

Now that the transfer market is open, Nottingham Forest can soon reach a £26 million deal.

Nottingham Forest want Florentino Luis

According to a report by the Portuguese newspaper Record, Nottingham Forest is hoping to sign Florentino Luis, number 61 for Benfica, this summer.

According to the Portuguese news source, Benfica is prepared to let go of the 24-year-old in order to raise money to keep Joao Neves, who Manchester United is interested in.

Leandro Barreiro is rumoured to be Benfica’s current choice to replace Luis.

According to the Record, Benfica wants to sell the Lobito player for €30 million (£26 million) this summer. Because of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), Nottingham Forest might only be able to afford this amount if sales are made.

During the 2023–24 season, Luis made 45 appearances for Benfica. He had ten yellow cards and did not contribute to a goal from defensive midfield.

Nuno Espirito Santo could sign his own N’Golo Kante

Given that Luis is not exactly a household name in football, many Nottingham Forest supporters may not be familiar with him.

If so, a comparison to a more well-known player would be helpful; in fact, the Nottingham Forest target has been compared to some of the top defensive midfield players in the game.

First, Luis was likened to Claude Makelele and Casemiro by Joao Tralhao, a former junior coach at Benfica, who told Goal that Luis “has the talent and quality to play in elite teams.” Do you recall the days of Real Madrid’s Galacticos? Makelele was crucial because they needed someone to keep the team balanced.

Casemiro performed that function more recently, freeing up Ronaldo, Modric, and Benzema for attack. Florentino is capable of those things.

In addition, the Mirror previously compared Luis to Kante, the 2018 World Cup winner and, at Chelsea and Leicester City, perhaps the world’s best defensive midfield player.
