Winner named in Everton, Newcastle & Aston Villa race for new multi-million midfielder – reports

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa appear to have beaten Everton and Newcastle in the hunt to recruit Ross Barkley.

On June 3, the writer claimed on Twitter that the Villans and Luton Town had reached a verbal agreement for a £5 million trade.

Newcastle World reported on June 3 that the Magpies and Toffees were interested in the 30-year-old after reviving his career at Luton Town.

Everton appear to have dodged Ross Barkley transfer bullet

It is good to the Toffees that Barkley did not re-sign because he may not have greatly improved their first team.

His job at Luton, which entailed carrying the ball forward with purpose, may be less effective under a different tactical setting.

Furthermore, Everton might redirect the finances and efforts allocated for Barkley to other areas in need, such as improving their defensive or finding a more consistent goal scorer.

The 30-year-old’s potential wage demands may have also put a strain on the club’s resources, limiting its transfer market options.

By avoiding this, the Toffees will be able to focus on developing a more balanced squad and making the signings Sean Dyche desires.

While a reunion could have been romantic, the club needed to be pragmatic, and the ownership situation would most likely need to be resolved first.
