‘Five million bonus’ – Aston Villa paying extra €5m for signing and will be thrilled about that

Often when clubs recruit players they insert outlandish bonus clauses in the deal so the selling club may give a greater headline amount for the transfer.

These provisions can include anything from winning the Ballon d’Or to staying in the Premier League or its equivalent. Generally speaking, they tend to be more focused on lofty goals.

Bonus clauses like this helped Aston Villa get Pau Torres from Villarreal in the summer of last year.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, which is based in the Spanish club’s hometown and is arguably the best source of information about them, Aston Villa has agreed to pay Pau Torres €33 million, with an additional €5 million in possible incentive payments.

There were two halves of the €5 million. The defender has more than met the requirements for minutes in his debut season, and the other has to do with qualifying for the Champions League.

Villarreal will be pleased with their “five million bonus,” according to the newspaper, and they won’t have anticipated the second portion as a possible outcome so swiftly.

Similarly, even if Aston Villa now paid a significant amount more for their acquisition, they will be happy with it.
