Southampton’s promotion could now ’cause an issue’ for Sunderland in the transfer window

Southampton’s elevation is now expected to “cause an issue” for Sunderland this summer, according to reports.

Following their victory in yesterday’s Championship play-off final, Southampton has already provided financial support to Sunderland; however, the club will get an additional £2 million in add-ons as a result of Ross Stewart’s departure.

But the Saints’ success could also mean bad news for the Black Cats.

The Wearside team, who finished their own season just six points above the relegation zone, will be losing a lot of important players this summer.Several players, including Dan Ballard, Anthony Patterson, and Jack Clarke, have been connected to moves to the Premier League.Dan Neil, who was crowned Sunderland’s Young Player of the Year last month, is one player who supporters truly won’t want to lose. The midfielder has also been linked with a move to the top flight, but the Black Cats will be hoping his support for his boyhood club will tempt him to stay.

Southampton could now try to sign Dan Neil

The likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham have expressed interest in Neil thus far, and it has seemed improbable that he would rise to such a height so quickly. He might, however, be persuaded to transfer to a club where he has a better chance of receiving consistent playing time. This is where Sunderland might be impacted by Southampton’s elevation, as reported by journalist Michael Graham, who says the team is a “huge fan” of Neil.

Dan Neil

“Southampton going up probably best for #SAFC today,” he tweeted on X. Ross Stewart should get another payment, though I have to admit that I’m not entirely sure what the terms of the agreement are. But they’re also huge fans of Dan Neil, so their possession of Prem cash might become problematic in the future.Southampton going up probably best for #SAFC today. Should trigger another payment on Ross Stewart, although must admit I don’t know full terms of the deal.  However, they’re also big admirers of Dan Neil, so them having Prem money could cause an issue later…

Southampton, who made attempts to recruit Patrick Roberts and Ross Stewart last summer, is obviously keeping a close eye on Sunderland as they plot their transfer strategy.Due of their elite status, there may be a greater chance of a bid being made for Neil, and Sunderland will almost certainly want a hefty price. It’s unclear, though, if the 22-year-old would desire to relocate.

Should Sunderland be worried about the Saints?

Neil might be able to secure a consistent position in a mid-table squad, but Southampton is likely among the favorites to fall back after their recent elevation. The Sunderland academy alumnus may be lured to sign with a team like West Ham or Wolves, who can assure him of a spot in the elite league and possibly even an opportunity to push for an England call-up.

But the Stadium of Light’s proximity to his house undoubtedly provides the team a significant edge in keeping him as well. Neil was born and reared in the northeast, so if he wanted to follow Russell Martin, he would have to go across the nation. It will be a very difficult transfer window in either case, so Sunderland will have to hope that Neil’s relationship with the team is enough to entice him to stay.
