Fabio Cannavaro delivers ‘exceptional’ verdict as £2m Aston Villa transfer saves club

Keinan Davis was the toast of Udinese after scoring his first goal for the club, which kept them in Serie A.

Davis, who moved to Italy from Aston Villa for £2 million last summer, has struggled with injuries in his first season. But all of that was forgotten when he scored the winning goal in Udinese’s relegation playoff against Frosinone on Sunday, coming off the bench and scoring on 76 minutes for a 1-0 triumph.

With the win, Udinese, managed by World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, ended two points above the relegation zone, while Frosinone, Sassuolo, and Salernitana were relegated.

“His (Davis’) absence affected the team because a player like that can turn a match for you,” Cannavaro stated. “I wasn’t sure whether or not to field him from the outset. But all the guys were amazing.”

“I’m so happy,” Davis exclaimed. “I was out wounded for a long period, and I didn’t get to show the fans what I could do. But I came back, and the more I played, the more confident I became. I’m overjoyed to have helped the squad and our fans.

“It was rough out there today. We knew Frosinone was looking to win at home. It was difficult, but we pulled all the stops. I wasn’t thinking about scoring personally; I just wanted us to win.

“Next season, I’ll be able to start in preseason, and I’m ready. I can’t wait to get started again. “I want to have a big season.”
