Looking Around The League: Bayer Leverkusen’s Year…

The 2023/24 Bundesliga season ended with Bayer Leverkusen winning their first ever Meisterschale and going unbeaten

The Bundesliga season is over except for the promotion/relegation playoff between VfL Bochum and Dusseldorf, the first leg of which finished 3-0 in Dusseldorf’s favor this evening. It has been much more fun than usual, partly because Bayern Munich finished third (scrubs). Bayern had the good grace to step aside and let Stuttgart have some fun as runners-up, and they did it in a spectacular fashion.

Elsewhere, there were some big stories on the final day of the season, from the perfect sendoff for Marco Reus to Bochum slipping into the playoff spot at the last minute, but the most important story of all is that, after spending all season saying Mainz are too good to go down, I was proven right. The perfect end to the season. Here’s how the final matchday of the season played out at the weekend.

Despite coming close multiple times, Bayer Leverkusen had never won a Bundesliga title. If you had told their fans that they would change that this season, I’m sure they would have been ecstatic. Not only did they do that, but they did so unbeaten, which had never been achieved in the Bundesliga. It was a monumental achievement, and they were just two games away from becoming the first European club to go unbeaten across every competition in a season, but Atalanta scuppered those plans last night by beating Leverkusen 3-0 in the Europa League final.

Despite that loss, this was still a phenomenal achievement, and Leverkusen have an opportunity to complete a domestic double by winning the DFB-Pokal at the weekend. Even a single loss in a season is a remarkable achievement, though it’s hard not to see that loss as a source of great frustration instead!

With Leverkusen’s campaign almost over, they will soon set their sights on repeating their success next season. Xabi Alonso has confirmed that he will be staying at the club, and so far, there haven’t been many suggestions that they will lose the stars in their title-winning squad. The main question marks are around Florian Wirtz, who will undoubtedly attract a lot of interest from every big club in Europe. Still, if they can keep most of this squad together, they will have a good shot at trying to run it back and retain their league title.
