“I wanted him at Celtic”, Brendan’s comments on Europa League Final star

Ademola Lookman stole the show in the Europa League Final in Dublin as his hat-trick fired Atalanta to a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. The former Charlton young prospect’s success has sparked speculation about a possible connection to Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers brought Lookman to Leicester City on loan back in September 2021.

Speaking to BBC Leicester, Rodgers said that during his first stint as Celtic manager, he had wanted to recruit Lookman.

“While he was at Charlton, I wanted to take him to Celtic.” When he was fifteen or sixteen, I knew about him.

“He works extremely hard, is physically strong, has excellent dribbling ability, and has an eye for goal.” I’m hoping he can succeed here.

That season, the Nigerian international made 42 appearances for Rodgers, contributing five assists and eight goals. Thanks to this form, the Italian team quickly moved to sign him, with the assistance of Lee Congerton, Head of Senior Recruitment.

Congerton talked candidly about his tenure at Celtic, acknowledging that talent identification was happening but that the club’s structure made it difficult to get transfers done.

At Celtic, we were cash-strapped. Accountant Peter Lawwell is a good individual. Brendan informed me that we require speed, force, and tempo.

“As everyone knows, PSG has a fantastic youth programmes that produced players who, at the time, had no intention of playing for the club.

During my tenure, we attempted to sign Diaby, who is currently at Aston Villa, and Nkunku, who is currently at Chelsea. However, I left since there were a few players I didn’t want to be close to. Peter and Brendan were both aware of that.

During the Irishman’s first term, Rodgers and Congerton faced a lot of criticism due to the quality of some of their recruits. While there were several excellent business segments, there were also those that left much to the imagination. To compete in Europe, the team needs to ensure that they avoid making the same error again this summer and let Rodgers bring in “his” players.
