Edwards maintains that even with money in hand, Luton won’t turn into the Championship’s “big spenders.”

Town may look to recruit when the transfer window opens

Rob Edwards, the manager of Luton, has no intention of the Hatters being the “big spenders” in the Championship the next year as they aim for an immediate return to the Premier League.

After just one season in the top level, Town was officially relegated to the second division on Sunday following a 4-2 loss to Fulham at home. The club’s finances were greatly enhanced by their promotion little under a year ago, as evidenced by the almost £22 million they were able to spend on new players last summer.

An estimated £40 million will be the first parachute payment made to the team for the upcoming season; if things don’t pick up right away, a second payment will be made the following season. When asked whether he would spend a portion of that money to reinforce his team and ensure their quick success, Edwards responded, “Potentially, it depends on what happens with outgoings as well.”

“I believe we could all take that and have a fair chance of making it to the top if you could tell me now, Rob, that you have the team you have here at the start of the following season. Although there won’t be many, we’ll need to keep an eye on our outgoings as well, but overall, I believe we’re in a situation where we can (spend). Once more, we won’t alter.

We won’t suddenly start spending a lot of money in the Championship just because we’ve been in the Premier League for a year; it simply won’t happen. We are quite certain that we can be in a strong position come August if we believe the player is the right fit and can help us, but we’ll have to wait and see what transpires with the outgoings as well.

Town is well-positioned to fend off any unwanted interest in certain highly sought-after members of their squad, as their financial situation is the best it has ever been. Edwards continued, saying, “We want to try and keep the majority of the group together, whether we would have stayed up, or what’s happened.” We intend to attack the league, and I have a good feeling that we will.

The only issue we have is that we don’t need to sell anyone, so we don’t have any financial concerns at all. There will inevitably be some change; that’s just how things work. However, the change must prioritise our needs and have a human element. There will be a slight shift, but it will be beneficial for us since there are a few boys there who have proven they can play and compete in the Premier League. Right now, we’re in a really good situation.
