The most recent Aston Villa transfer is discussed by manager Diego Simeone along with defender Mario Hermoso’s future, who has been linked to a move to Villa.
Diego Simeone has expressed his desire for Mario Hermoso to stay at Atletico Madrid despite the defender’s persistent rumours of a summer transfer to Aston Villa. Hermoso’s deal in the Spanish capital expires this summer, and even though Simeone wants him to continue, it doesn’t seem probable that he will.
Hermoso, 28, joined Atleti from Espanyol in 2019 and has since become a regular member of the club. He signed a five-year contract upon joining, which is set to expire this summer, and cost Atleti more than £20 million. The centre back has continued to be a regular selection in Simeone’s squad this year, helping the team guarantee their spot in the Champions League for the following year.
Villa can promise Champions League football next season and maybe take advantage of Atleti’s desire to reduce their entire wage-bill, even though Serie A champion Inter Milan is also interested in Hermoso. After bidding farewell to loanee Clement Lenglet and with Tyrone Mings still recuperating from his long-term injury layoff, they are also searching for another centre half this summer.
