Contact made: Everton make first move for £25m future star as club president travels to England

Despite their off-field financial issues, Everton has maintained their Premier League standing and is now focusing on adding new players for Sean Dyche’s team.

News about Everton transfers

The Toffees are at a risky crossroads since the Premier League has not yet approved 777 Partners’ takeover and it is looking less and less probable that it will happen at all. In the event of no takeover, they’ll probably find themselves forced to sell significant players like Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana in order to earn cash.

Just before the season ended, Dyche alluded to a possible issue at a news conference, telling The Guardian that “it will probably be juggling dust, not sand, if the [777] takeover doesn’t happen, or a takeover.”

“Because, well, who knows? Then, I would assume, you have to self-generate everything since, well, there’s not like a cash cow lying around. How can you gain access to what you are losing if you self-generate? How can you bring in someone who is just as good as the one going if someone leaves? This club doesn’t have the time to nurture young players, hence there isn’t any.

That hasn’t stopped the rumours from spreading, though. Graeme Bailey of HITC reports that Wesley Gassova’s availability has been discussed by Everton. Augusto Melo, the president of Corinthians, is scheduled to visit England for the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. During his visit, he is also expected to undertake discussions over Wesley.

West Ham United is said to have offered just half of the £25 million asking price for the young Brazilian, so those conversations may not be with Everton. Instead, negotiations are most likely already underway. Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Crystal Palace appear to be interested in the left winger as well.

Everton can’t afford the risk of Wesley

Even though the kid is only 19 years old and valued £25 million, one should wonder if Everton should be investing their meagre transfer budget on a player who, despite his promise, is not likely to be ready for the Premier League right away.

The Toffees should focus on established players in the summer window, even if it would be disappointing and upsetting that they can’t afford to take such risks.

It’s also unclear if Everton will have the funds to invest this much in the face of player sales during the upcoming unpredictably turbulent few months. Ideally, a takeover will strengthen Dyche’s existing team while freeing up the Goodison Park staff to concentrate on potential future jewels. However, at this point, the ideal world seems more like a fantasy.

Wesley, on the other hand, appears to need to make a choice this summer. Given his future and the curiosity of other Premier League clubs, he needs to choose his next club wisely. Given Everton’s recent relegation struggles, they may be passed over regardless of their financial situation.
