“Brendan’s Regret: ‘I Wanted Him at Celtic,’ Remarks Coach on Europa League Final Star

Brendan’s remarks about the star of the Europa League Final, “I wanted him at Celtic

On May 22, 2024, in Dublin, Ireland, during the UEFA Europa League 2023/24 final match between Atalanta BC and Bayer 04 Leverkusen at Dublin Arena, Ademola Lookman of Atalanta BC bites their winner’s medal as he poses for a photograph with the Match Ball after scoring a hat-trick and winning the Hankook Tyres Player of the Match award after defeating Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Ademola Lookman’s hat-trick helped Atalanta defeat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the Europa League Final in Dublin, stealing the show. The former Charlton young prospect’s success has sparked speculation about a possible connection to Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers brought Lookman to Leicester City on loan back in September 2021.

In an interview with BBC Leicester, Rodgers said that during his first stint as Celtic manager, he had intended to sign Lookman.

“While he was at Charlton, I wanted to take him to Celtic.” When he was fifteen or sixteen, I knew about him.

“He works extremely hard, is physically strong, has excellent dribbling ability, and has an eye for goal.” I’m hoping he can succeed here.

That season, the Nigerian international made 42 appearances for Rodgers, contributing five assists and eight goals. Thanks to this form, the Italian team quickly moved to sign him, with the assistance of Lee Congerton, Head of Senior Recruitment.

Congerton talked candidly about his tenure at Celtic, acknowledging that talent identification was occurring but that the club’s hierarchical structure made it difficult to close agreements.

At Celtic, we were cash-strapped. Accountant Peter Lawwell is a good individual. Brendan informed me that we require speed, force, and tempo.

“As everyone knows, PSG has a fantastic youth program that produced players who, at the time, had no intention of playing for the club.

During my tenure, we attempted to sign Diaby, who is currently at Aston Villa, and Nkunku, who is currently at Chelsea. However, I left since there were a few players I didn’t want to be close to. Peter and Brendan were both aware of that.

During the Irishman’s first term, Rodgers and Congerton faced a lot of criticism due to the quality of some of their recruits. While there were several excellent business segments, there were also those that left much to the imagination. To compete in Europe, the team needs to ensure that they avoid making the same error again this summer and let Rodgers bring in “his” players.
