Report: Sean Dyche is leading the charge for £32k-a-week player who Everton tried to sign in January

It appears that Everton is already creating a list of potential summer transfer targets, even though their financial constraints are well-established.

Despite having to acknowledge that their precarious situation leaves them open to offers from competitors, Kevin Thelwell is determined to enter the market and try to score a few deals.

Furthermore, his strategies are obvious because he successfully recruited some astute additions with postponed permanent fees and loan agreements last summer.

Thus, it will be intriguing to watch how the Toffees approach their renewed interest in Benfica’s Florentino Luis.

In the summer transfer window, Florentino Luis is desired by Everton.

After making an attempt to sign the Portuguese master in January, Everton is now prepared to declare their interest in the 24-year-old during yet another transfer window.

This is based on information from the Portuguese publication O Jogo, which claims that Sean Dyche is spearheading the effort to try and sign Luis.

“Led by Sean Dyche, the Liverpool club can move forward soon with a significant proposal to guarantee Florentino to transfer away from Benfica.” The source notes that Florentino previously played for Getafe after an experience in Monaco. Last summer, his name was linked to Barcelona.

Thelwell would consider this to be a significant acquisition, but putting this transaction together will undoubtedly be difficult.

This is no average athlete, after all—Luis and Enzo Fernandez’s partnership turned legendary in the 2022–2023 campaign. He even received an offer for a new deal as a result, with a rumoured buyout clause around €120 million (£102 million).

Is Everton preparing for life after Amadou Onana?

Being interested in such a reputable defensive midfielder is understandable, as he will probably fetch a high price considering the reputation he has already established in Portugal.

The enforcer, who makes £32,000 a week, has received praise for the way he screens his backline and has even been compared inadvertently to N’Golo Kante.

Everton's Amadou Onana during the Premier League match between Everton FC and Sheffield United at Goodison Park on May 11, 2024 in Liverpool, England.

He excels everywhere for his ability to advance the ball in addition to winning it back, proving that he is much more than just a ball-winner.

He really ranks in the top 1% for interceptions per 90, the top 5% for blocks per 90, and higher than other midfielders in Europe who play in leagues other than the top five. However, he combines this with passing excellence, ranking in the top 3% via FBref for passes attempted, 5% for passes completed, and 7% for progressive passes.

Given that Luis is being enticed to try this Premier League idea by Arsenal and many other elite clubs, it might make sense to try and ship Onana off for a ridiculous amount of money.
