NFC Contender May Shockingly Cut $39 Million Playmaker

Here’s How The Dallas Cowboys, an NFC contender, Might Unexpectedly Cut $39 million playmaker Brandin Cooks This Offseason.

The $39 million playmaker wide receiver Brandon Cooks of the Dallas Cowboys, an NFC contender, may be suddenly dismissed this summer. The veteran may have to be traded or released by the American team during their contract discussions, according to a report. The team is in a difficult situation, therefore in order to retain Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, they would have to give up some compensation. Cooks hasn’t, however, produced as much as they had hoped for the previous season.

Lamb and Prescott have a $55.45 million cap hit in 2024 as they approach the last year of their contracts. The Cowboys have a limited amount of time to work their magic and save space so they may offer them new offers. Since they’ll be seeking for a new contract before playing their final season, they’re hopeful that none of the players would hold out this year. If so, the Cowboys may be forced to act quickly in order to preserve room, which may involve dealing or cutting Cooks.

Despite skipping the first day of OTAs, Micah Parsons is also eligible for an extension this year, but he isn’t in a rush to obtain one. The Cowboys may need to make some tough decisions because their cap room is barely $1.925 million.

What This Means for Depth

The idea of the Cowboys moving on from Cooks wouldn’t sound bad if they had the depth for it. However, the release of Michael Gallup leaves only two reliable receivers on the team. Dallas can’t afford to lose Cooks unless they’re able to sign a replacement. They were able to bring in Zay Jones but he moved on to sign with the Cardinals.

The Cowboys have done little to nothing this offseason to improve their roster so it shouldn’t surprise anyone if they move on from Cooks. However, if Lamb is holding then that would mean Cooks would have to step up as their new WR1. The receiving outlook doesn’t look promising for a team that was hoping to “all in” this offseason. KaVontae Turpin, Ryan Flournoy and Jalen Brooks are the backlines of the receiving corps that remain.

While there could be alternatives out there for America’s team, can they match Cooks’ extraordinary performance? Most likely not, but that could be the only option available to them as opposed to playing the waiting game. The Cowboys are optimistic that they can work out an agreement for its players. In the event that Dallas moves on, Cooks may end up where they are.
