Sunderland veterans Gordon Armstrong and Gary Bennett think the team needs to bolster their experience this summer.

During recent transfer windows, the Black Cats have primarily acquired younger players, including a large number of foreign players who have never before competed in the Championship. The Southampton team’s average age has dropped even more as a result of the captain Corry Evans’ impending departure this summer.

Bennett told the Echo that while it would be nice if the Black Cats could win promotion by consistently signing younger players, he doesn’t think they can. Players that have been there, seen it, and done it, in my opinion, are what you need to have that experience. You are also searching for such leadership—someone who, let’s say, possesses that kind of guidance. Right now, you are observing your team. Who is your leader? Your head would be scratched.

In the forthcoming transfer window, Sunderland will also look to retain onto their core players, as they have expressed interest in players like goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, Dan Ballard, and Jack Clarke.

“Who stays and who goes will be the other issue in the summer,” Armstrong continued. It’s OK that the business plan is to purchase young players and resell them for a profit. It’s a good thing that I understand that. Though it wasn’t hard to surpass, there have been many ways in which it has improved over the last few years.

“Overall, it’s improved, but prior experience is still required.” Given the likelihood that Clarke will soon depart, who else will go? No one is entirely sure. Patterson, Ballard, or no one at all might be the culprit. It will be challenging to replace those objectives if Clarke leaves, in my opinion. The hiring process for the role must be appropriate.

“Then, in my opinion, you need two (strikers) in order for them to have a successful season, not just one. The other players, Hemir and others, must be chosen in order for them to go out on loan, gain experience, and possibly improve as a result.
