Crystal Palace flop Alexander Sorloth leads La Liga’s Golden Boot race after stunning Real Madrid with four goals for Villarreal

Premier League fans will likely remember Alexander Sorloth as a flop after he scored zero goals in 16 Premier League games for Crystal Palace in 2018 and 2019.

However, this season, the 28-year-old Norwegian striker for Villarreal has been on fire.

In 33 La Liga games, Sorloth has scored 23 goals, including FOUR against Real Madrid on Sunday.

Madrid has the greatest defensive record in La Liga by a wide margin and has already been proclaimed the champions of Spain with several games remaining.

As a result, many believed the game was finished when Carlo Ancelotti’s team led 4-1 at the Estadio de la Ceramica at halftime.

Soloth, however, who had given Villarreal what appeared to be little more than a consolation goal in the first half, scored three goals in 11 minutes to give his team a 4–4 tie.

Prior to this, Arda Guler had scored a brace for Madrid, with goals from Lucas Vazquez and Joselu.

Sorloth climbed to the top of the La Liga Golden Boot competition this season with his outstanding performance versus Madrid.

Artem Dovbyk of Girona is Sorloth’s closest opponent with one round of games left; he is two goals behind.

One week remains in the La Liga Golden Boot race of 2023–2024.

  1. Alexander Sorloth (Villarreal) – 23 goals
  2. Artem Dovbyk (Girona) – 21 goals
  3. Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) – 19 goals
  4. Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona) – 18 goals

On Sunday, Sorloth’s old team was also in play as Palace defeated Aston Villa 5-0 at Selhurst Park to round up their Premier League season.

The other two goals were scored by Everechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta, who recorded his second hat-trick in his Palace career.

With victories over Manchester United, Liverpool, and Newcastle among their final seven games, Palace amassed an incredible 19 points to finish 10th in the league.
