‘Weirdly…’: Journalist slams Aston Villa star for playing like it was ‘seven-a-side’ v Crystal Palace

After Aston Villa’s final-day loss to Crystal Palace, one player was charged with being unruly.

Unai Emery’s team performed appallingly, losing 5-0 to a Palace team revitalised by Oliver Glasner.

As for Aston Villa, well, they had finished their job before the final game, so maybe they can afford to be a little subpar after celebrating qualifying for the Champions League.

One player’s lack of discipline, though it had little bearing on the game, is somewhat less forgiveable and would have made Emery uncomfortable with what he was witnessing.

Douglas Luiz lacked discipline in Crystal Palace defeat

Douglas Luiz has played a significant role in Villa’s incredible season, which included a trip to the Champions League and the Europa Conference League semifinals.

Luiz has had to play practically every minute since Boubacar Kamara’s season-ending injury in February, but recently, he has appeared tired.

Luiz decided to add some Brazilian flare to the match at Selhurst Park even though there wasn’t much at stake for his team, who finished second in midfield.

Before Jean Philipe Mateta’s second goal, the Villa midfield was “walkabouts,” according to Jacob Tanswell, the Athletic’s Aston Villa reporter, who also wrote on “X” that Douglas Luiz was “weirdly jumping out of shape” and not exactly playing the disciplined role next to Calum Chambers.

That was only a few minutes after Tanswell had called attention to Luiz’s display’s carefree attitude, which occasionally verged on conceit, saying, “Douglas

Luiz’s constant ball rolls and stepovers are like he’s down goals on a Monday night joining in a seven-a-side.”

Luiz will not get much needed summer rest

Luiz did not have a spectacular performance in the Villa loss to Palace, but now that the dust has settled, he can look back on a very successful campaign for both Villa individually and as a team.

Because of his achievements, he was chosen for Brazil’s Copa America team this summer. Since his country is predicted to advance far in the competition, he won’t have much time to rest and recover.

Several Villa players will experience the same problem because the European Championships start the following month as well.

The limited group has been put to the test this season in both the domestic and European seasons, therefore the team will require additions this summer.

It’s possible that Luiz’s lacklustre season-ending performance was caused by a mix of exhaustion and the pressure of Champions League qualification coming to an end earlier in the week, in which case his careless play might be overlooked.
