Arsenal v Everton review – Last minute Havertz strike saves our blushes

Arsenal launched a full-scale offensive as soon as the whistle went in their final game of the season, which was another must-win.

We were within five minutes of grabbing the lead and applying pressure to City, but the much-feared news arrived that Phil Foden had scored at the Etihad.

But we didn’t let up, as Pickford saved a couple more excellent opportunities, and the Toffees didn’t appear to be getting close to Raya’s box until the fifteenth minute.

When Foden doubled City’s lead, the wind was sucked out of our sails once more, and we realised we had no hope of winning.

We had a scare ourselves on the half-hour mark when Calvert Lewin broke into our box and skillfully slipped past Raya, only to strike the post. He was again the quickest to the rebound, and he managed to hit the post once more!

We immediately rushed back to the other end, giving Martinelli a brief opportunity to score, but he stumbled severely and took some time to get up and limp to the sidelines.  Luckily, he wasn’t hurt.

After Everton broke into our half five minutes later, Partey was called for a professional foul. Declan Rice deflected the ensuing free kick, which led to a disastrous outcome as we were now down 1-0.

Arsenal recovered rapidly, levelling the score and reducing tension with a scream from Tomiyasu. We find out right away that West Ham has come back, giving us some optimism once more. What further encouragement is needed for Arsenal before the break?

Havertz attempted to head a Martinelli cross early in the second half but was unable to put it well.

Arsenal kept up the pressure, always fearing another Everton breakaway, but we started making some careless mistakes and the Blues were starting to appear more formidable.

Gabriel may have been crockled in a struggle with Doucore just before the hour mark, as the Everton player was given a yellow card.

Zinchenko replaced him without delay, and shortly after, the news of City’s third goal reached us.

Then Everton stormed away once more, forcing Raya to make an incredible stop against Calvert Lewin. Arsenal was then back on the other end, urgently trying to find the winner.

Havertz caught Martinelli’s flotation in another just as it was painfully approaching the bar. Timber and Smith Rowe were brought to go all out with 20 minutes remaining. Jesus was then brought onto the pitch to attempt a comeback in the final twelve minutes.

We had a brief fright when Raya was caught off guard by Arsenal’s menacing free kick, sending him scampering all over the back.

I have to admit that Everton’s defence and set-piece play have been excellent.

Havertz received another cross from Martinelli, but his errant header caused him to kick the post in frustration.

We had heard that West Ham had had a goal disallowed, but before Havertz scored, it appeared that Jesus had handled the ball during the buildup, but the referee rejected the claim.

It was finally 2-1 with five minutes remaining.

Well, anything. Even though we didn’t win a title, we still had the most points and goals in a season since the Invincibles.
