Old Trafford penalty incident involving Anthony Gordon: Premier League tribunal rules on ruling

Anthony Gordon scored at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

But what grabbed media attention was an incident in which he was denied a scoring opportunity.

Anthony Gordon ran into the penalty area during the first half of the match, and as he was about to fire, Sofyan Amrabat challenged him from behind, sending Gordon down.

Robert Jones, the on-field referee, did not award a penalty, and Jarred Gillett, the VAR, did not request that he view a replay on the TV monitor by the side of the field.

Both Anthony Gordon and his teammates, as well as the Newcastle United supporters who were not there at the game, were shocked to see nothing given. They watched the replays and could plainly see that Amrabat had taken the player down from behind, raking his studs along Gordon’s Achilles.

Clearly a stonewall penalty, and the torn Anthony Gordon sock served as additional proof for all of us.

An official panel from the Premier League has now looked into it.

Report from BBC Sport, May 18, 2024:

An independent panel concludes that the referee made the right decision in not awarding Newcastle a penalty during Wednesday’s loss at Manchester United.

Late in the first half, with United leading 1-0, Sofyan Amrabat trod on the heel of Magpies winger Anthony Gordon as he raced into the box.

The Premier League’s Key Match event Panel has now examined the event, which Gordon described as “a clear penalty” and which the hosts went on to win 3-2.

One judge felt that the defender’s “left foot impedes the attacker on the back of his heel” was sufficient to award a penalty in the decision, which BBC Sport has access to.

The other four panelists, on the other hand, had different opinions, and they all agreed that the video assistance referee (VAR) should not intervene.

This takes the absurdity of the penalty not being awarded on the evening to a whole new level.

It’s incomprehensible that an attacking player pulled down from behind clearly results in a penalty.

Although the Premier League panel remains unidentified, there are unsubstantiated rumors suggesting that Ferguson, Cantona, Beckham, and Keane are their code names.
