Man Utd and Newcastle are two of the FIVE demoted players that could make an early Premier League comeback.

Five players from clubs that were demoted are examined by TEAMtalk in the hopes that they will return to the Premier League right away this summer. Manchester United and Newcastle are two teams that are known to be interested.

Stars from recently relegated teams were purchased by Premier League clubs in some of the biggest transfer deals of the previous summer.

James Maddison signed a £40 million contract to join Tottenham from demoted Leicester. James Ward-Prowse made a £30 million move from Southampton to West Ham. Romeo Lavia also left St. Mary’s, spending £53 million to join Chelsea.

The three relegated teams from this season—Burnley, Luton (who is still mathematically alive), and Sheffield United—are unlikely to be able to demand such exorbitant prices for any of their players.

However, Premier League teams could still chase a few of the stars who have been dropped this season.

Ross Barkley
Barkley, the 2023–24 Premier League season’s comeback king, may have ended in relegation with Luton, but he has rebuilt his reputation at Kenilworth Road this season after playing for Everton and Chelsea in the past.

The former England playmaker had a poor season with Nice in Ligue 1, therefore he signed on a free transfer to Rob Edwards’ team last summer. A £15 million move to Stamford Bridge in 2018 after an unimpressive stint with Chelsea, so expectations were low for a player who was previously considered one of the best in English football.

However, Barkley has been superb for a struggling Luton team, tallying four assists and netting five goals. The 30-year-old’s former supporters, Newcastle United, are said to have already rekindled their interest in him, while Manchester United is also said to have made an unexpected approach of their own.

The Premier League is where I want to play,” Barkley stated to Sky Sports in April. “I’m not really focused on that right now, but I want to play in Europe again.”

DEEP DIVE: When is the transfer window for the summer of 2024? All the information you require

Benjamin Brereton
Brereton, a Chilean international born in Stoke, only recently joined Sheffield United on loan from Villarreal. He joined the struggling Blades in January.

However, the 25-year-old forward has drawn enough attention that Premier League teams are expected to show interest whenever he returns to his parent club in Spain in the summer.

In just 13 games for the Brammall Lane team, the former Blackburn player amassed an incredible six goals and one assist, averaging a goal per 149 minutes. A seasoned, trustworthy scorer like Brereton would be a huge benefit for any of the three promoted teams from the Championship or for clubs in the Premier League’s lower divisions.

In fact, Leicester City is already favoured to make an attempt to sign the outstanding frontman.

Berge Sander
Berge, formerly a club record £22 million signing for Sheffield United, signed a £12 million agreement to join Burnley last summer.

The 26-year-old Norway international also possesses the ability to perform at the highest level and a level of experience that will appeal to potential suitors, even though he didn’t light up the Premier League in his debut season at Turf Moor.

With over 60 Premier League appearances under his belt, Champions League experiences with former club Genk, and 44 caps for his nation, Berge may attract interest from elite teams should Burnley’s relegation make the 6′ 5in midfielder available for a bargain transfer.

Alfie Doughty, wing-back for Luton After the Hatters were promoted to the Premier League this season, Doughty experienced his first taste of elite football, and he has demonstrated that he is capable of staying at the top level even with his team’s relegation.

The 24-year-old was instrumental in the team’s ascent from the second division after joining Luton from Stoke City in 2022.

Doughty has performed excellently this season for a club that has gained respect for their ability to fight against the slide by defying predictions throughout the season. The Luton man has more assists in the Premier League this season—eight—than any other player at a team that was demoted thanks to his accurate left-footed crosses and steady delivery from set pieces.

Doughty is a great prospect to be pursued by the Premier League’s remaining teams due to his relative youth, adaptability, and wide delivery.

Dara O’Shea

O’Shea, a 24-cap Republic of Ireland international, joined Burnley only last summer for a fee of £7 million. Since then, he has helped Vincent Kompany’s team score three goals and provide four assists while playing a dominant defensive core role.

The center defender is someone the Clarets plan to hang onto as they look to improve from the Championship the following year.

However, the 25-year-old defender has shown he belongs at this level and may become a target for Premier League teams. He played 28 games for the Baggies in the top flight during the 2020–21 campaign.
