A Newcastle United player receives post-match recognition after Oxford’s promotion is secured by a Wembley brace.

Newcastle United star gets post-match mention after Wembley brace seals promotion for Oxford

Oxford United defeated Bolton Wanderers 2-0 in the play-off final at Wembley today to secure promotion to the Championship.

Josh Murphy, who would appear quite familiar to Newcastle United supporters, scored both of Oxford’s goals. The twin brother of Jacob Murphy propelled Oxford into the second division with two spectacular goals.

With the ball at the outskirts of the box, Murphy’s first goal was a powerful effort from the winger, who looked up and had no other alternative but to launch a ferocious effort into the far corner. Just enough touch was made on it by a helpful Bolton defender for it to loop over the diving goalkeeper.

In the second, Oxford used Murphy’s signature pace to cling onto a ball over the top, smash it past the goalkeeper, and slot it in. I’m exaggerating when I say that because Murphy and the ball were moving at a really decent clip.

Josh Murphy, who was on the field when Sky Sports spoke with him after the game, acknowledged his brother, Jacob, a winger for Newcastle.

“I want to play in these big moments and my brother says it’s my time to shine, and I think I’ve done that today.”
The two brothers have a bond that only twins can comprehend. Josh recently disclosed that, if one of them is able to watch, the two text each other during the game such that, upon returning to the dressing room, they have a ton of text messages complimenting or criticizing each other’s performances.

When Josh and Jacob played for Cardiff City and Newcastle, respectively, in the Premier League back in 2018, they made history as the second set of twins to ever square off against one another.

Josh was hopeful that Jacob would have been granted permission to attend the final at Wembley today, as Newcastle is playing at Brentford tomorrow, and he would have been in the vicinity, but we’re not sure if he made it.

Nevertheless, Jacob took the time to compliment his brother on Instagram, referring to him as the man of the moment and saying, “You deserve this big bro.”

Josh deserves all the congratulations, and maybe Jacob will match the feat tomorrow with a brace. not to be avaricious in any way.
