Keith Wyness: Third Everton points deduction is now a ‘real worry’

Former Everton manager Keith Wyness has stated that a third Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) violation and the ensuing point punishment are a “real worry.”

The 66-year-old, who ran a football consultancy advising elite clubs after serving as CEO of Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009, stated on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that Evertonians are “concerned” about possible player sales that may be necessary to prevent breaking the rules a third time.

Everton lost eight points this season as a result of two different PSR violations in the 2021–22 and 2022–23 campaigns.

In order to avoid further sanctions, the club must submit its 2023–24 campaign accounts by June 30 and keep losses under £105 million over a rolling three-year period.

Because of this, Everton might have to let go of some of its best players in order to abide with the regulations. Jarrad Branthwaite, Amadou Onana, and Jordan Pickford are all drawing interest from England and Europe.

Wyness worries about Everton’s “spiralling” points deduction.

Wyness expressed his worries about the Merseyside team going into a PSR violation “spiral.”

“The supporters are concerned about avoiding another points deduction under the PSR rules,” he said on Football Insider’s Insider Track programme.

“That’s obviously already on the slate; we have the stadium interest case coming up.

But the real concern is if things spiral out of control and we have to pay another PSR fee the following year.

Who are we going to sell to eliminate that threat at the same time?

“Who are the two or three players that need to be sold this summer? There is some concern.”
