Saints announce important update for rookies and veterans trying to make the roster.
The games that are played first are not included in the full NFL schedule release. Yes, we are referring to the preseason. Position battles can be won or lost in the exhibition games, however there are currently only three of them.
In addition to playing two away games in the preseason, the New Orleans Saints will play nine home games and eight road games during the regular season. Three games, two of which are against NFC rivals.
Wednesday night, New Orleans unveiled both the regular season schedule and their three-game preseason schedule. Let’s review the displays that the Saints will be putting on in August.
Week 1: TBD – Saints at Arizona Cardinals (FOX)
The first opponents for New Orleans in their preseason game are Arizona and Kyler Murray. Seeing how much of the Saints starting lineup they play with will be fascinating. In the prior year’s first preseason week, Derek Carr only saw play.
Quarterback reps were split between Jameis Winston and Jake Haener for the rest of the preseason. Because of Klint Kubiak’s new offensive scheme, New Orleans may use Carr a little more in the exhibitions. The first quarter of this game may provide the best look of the offence in 2024.
Week 2: August 18th at 8 P.M. ET – Saints at San Francisco 49ers (FOX)
This matchup will certainly be different from the first. Carr and the starters on offense may get some reps, but expect this game to begin the most important positional showdowns for depth players.
Rookies and recently added veterans in free agency will battle to prove their worth to the roster. The 49ers are one of the best teams in the league, and their depth will be put to the test here.
Week 3: TBD – Tennessee Titans at Saints (FOX)
The final opportunity for rookies to establish their potential as first-year contributions is this game. I would guess that Carr, Olave, Kamara, and other starters won’t even suit up for this one, and that very few, if any, of them, will play more than a few snaps.
To get ready for their Week 1 matchup with the Carolina Panthers, they will rest. Although the Saints’ roster is talented, there is still a lot that needs to be worked out between training camp and the preseason. Watch how they get through it to start the regular season.
