During the offseason, there has been a lot of discussion surrounding the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott, particularly in light of their disappointing Wild Card Round loss.
The Cowboys’ contract extensions with Micah Parsons, Dak Prescott, and CeeDee Lamb loom large over the team.
Both parties apparently had a “mutual understanding of his current deal and wouldn’t be negotiating a new contract, but that may need to change” despite the fact that Prescott is approaching the end of his current agreement.
The most recent NFL news also complicated matters about a possible extension.
Cowboys News: Jared Goff’s Extension Makes Things Harder Between Dak and the Cowboys
On May 13, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said that Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions have reached an agreement on a $212 million, four-year contract that included a $170 million guarantee.
Goff is currently the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL, only surpassed by Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, with an annual salary of $53 million.
Given that Goff is now getting this significant extension, Prescott’s cost will only increase. Goff ranked second in the NFL in 2023 with 4,575 passing yards, fourth with 30 passing touchdowns, and eleventh with 60.3 QBR.
During the previous season, Prescott led in throwing touchdowns (36) and finished first in passing yards (4,516) and QBR (72.7).
Prescott’s W-L record is something else he’ll bring to the bargaining table. In comparison, Goff is 66-50-1 as a starter and the three-time Pro Bowler is 73-41 in his career.
Prescott is still one of the top signal callers in the NFL and deserves to be rewarded as such, even though he hasn’t been able to help the Cowboys advance through the postseason.
Prescott’s next contract will cost more as a result of Goff’s extension.
