Alan Shearer praises Nottingham Forest players who have ‘had to put up with’ huge issue

NottinghamshireLive provides the most recent Nottingham Forest news, including the possibility of another new stadium site.
The former Premier League striker has spoken out on Forest’s current condition after a weekend of mainly positive outcomes.

Alan Shearer has applauded Nottingham Forest’s players’ fortitude in the face of the club’s point deduction problems, which has all but secured the club’s Premier League status.

Forest were relegated in March after being fined four points for not adhering to the top-flight Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

It’s been a hard-fought battle ever since, but following last weekend’s results, things are looking up in the East Midlands. With one encounter remaining, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team is three points ahead of 18th-placed Luton Town, with a goal difference of 12 clear strikes. Burnley’s relegation has also been confirmed, easing anxieties.

“It’s been really tough for the players having to deal with that because it’s through no fault of their own that they have been put under huge pressure all season,” Shearer remarked in reaction on The Rest is Football.

“It wasn’t until the last six or seven weeks that they found out about their punishment, and the players have had to deal with it. People say that players should ignore it and simply go out and play, but it does effect you, and it will undoubtedly affect you as a player.

“I think the players have done really well in handling this stuff they’ve had to handle and coming through that.”

Forest will face Burnley on the final day of the Premier League season, which ends on Sunday. At the same time, Rob Edwards’ Luton play Fulham at Kenilworth Road, knowing they have a massive challenge ahead of them and will need a lot of luck to stay in the league for now.

Shearer also highlighted his admiration for certain players in the current Forest squad, describing Morgan Gibbs-White as a ‘exciting’ potential, despite the penalty the club received for making such large investments.

Nottingham City Council leader David Mellen argues that transferring Nottingham Forest from the City Ground to a new stadium on industrial land across the River Trent is not a viable option.

The Reds and the council are now at odds over a new lease for the club at the City Ground. Forest is being given the opportunity to acquire the land for their stadium from the municipality for around £10 million. The club’s chairman, Tom Cartledge, has also revealed that “due diligence” is being conducted on “several” other sites, including Toton.

Forest fans have made it known to owner Evangelos Marinakis that they want the club to remain at the City Ground. Marinakis witnessed Liverpool supporters chanting’stand up for the City Ground’ and ‘Toton’s a s***hole, I want to stay here’ during the first half of their Premier League match against Chelsea at home on Saturday.

Mellen told The Athletic that a site opposite Notts County’s Meadow Lane stadium is not suitable for a new stadium.

“The land has our (Eastcroft) incinerator on it and that would have to be re-provided, at tens of millions of pounds, somewhere else,” he stated. “The incinerator currently heats 5,500 homes in the Snonton and St Ann’s districts.” Many buildings in the city centre have mains running out of their location. So it’s more than simply a free plot of land where we can move everything. It provides critical services to the city. They could be moved, but it would most likely cost more than the lease we are asking for.”

Forest’s current lease on the City Ground property expires in 33 years, and the council is reportedly looking to raise the rent to £1 million from £250,000.
