Dane Scarlett’s vital Tottenham impact and why he was unhappy with Cristian Romero vs Burnley

Dane Scarlett had a role to play in Tottenham’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Burnley at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon

Dane Scarlett has had to exercise extreme patience in regards to his playing time in Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham starting lineup. The striker left on a temporary basis once more in late August to sign a season-long contract with Ipswich Town after spending the 2022–2023 season on loan with Portsmouth in League One.

Though their promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 2002 made it a year to remember for everyone at Portman Road, the teenage striker had a very frustrating season playing little in Suffolk. After the 20-year-old made 12 appearances for the Tractor Boys, all of which came as substitutes late in games, Tottenham decided in December to invite him back.

Scarlett’s move to Ipswich meant that he would play for Postecoglou’s squad for the rest of the season and be a first team option. He was unable to play for a third club in the 2023–24 season following his appearance for Spurs in their Carabao Cup tie at Fulham in the days preceding his switch. Scarlett made his debut for the Lilywhites in the 1-0 FA Cup victory over the Clarets, and he has since made four more appearances for the team. Scarlett last appeared for Spurs against Burnley in his first game back after returning from loan.

On Saturday afternoon, he made his most recent outing for Tottenham against Burnley, who were once again the team’s rivals as they won 2-1 against fierce opposition. Scarlett, who had previously only seen a few minutes in the Premier League while coming off the bench, was brought on by Postecoglou for the last fifteen minutes as Spurs looked for a late winner.

The academy graduate did play a significant part in the triumph after a cunning move that gave Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven the advantage. Naturally, the Dutchman gained all the praise for a fantastic finish in which he displayed his abilities, but Scarlett’s deft play created the opening for his colleague to score.

After receiving a pass from James Maddison, Van van Ven moved into a central area from his left-back position. Scarlett shifted to his left, luring Burnley defender Maxime Esteve across with him. This gave the Netherlands international a free shot on goal as he skillfully struck the bottom corner. Many had observed the striker’s part in the victory and had rightfully commended him for his crucial effort.
