Coach previously linked with Sunderland job holds ‘positive talks’ with European club

A year ago, during Tony Mowbray’s tenure at the Stadium of Light, Italian coach Francesco Farioli was connected to the Sunderland position.

A year after being connected to the Sunderland position, Italian coach Francesco Farioli is said to have had encouraging discussions with Ajax about taking over as the team’s next head coach.

When Tony Mowbray was still in charge on Wearside in April of last year, seasoned writer Fabrizio Romano tweeted that Farioli was at the top of Sunderland’s shortlist. That was the first indication that the Black Cats were considering a move for the player. The French team Nice hired Farioli as their head coach in June of last year, and with three games left, he has led them to fifth place in Ligue 1.

Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports Italy reports that Farioli is a serious candidate to take over at Ajax, though, given that John van ‘t Schip was appointed temporary head coach in October of last year. According to Di Marzio, Farioli, who still has a year left on his Nice deal, has had encouraging discussions with the Dutch team.

In addition, Sunderland is looking for a new head coach for the upcoming campaign after Michael Beale’s departure in February, when Mike Dodds was appointed as an interim manager.
