The Tevez and Mascherano Signings: A Look Back

On this day in 2007, West Ham United decided not to appeal the Premier League’s £5.5 million fine for breaking third-party ownership restrictions in the signings of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

West Ham’s bold signing of the Argentine combo in 2006 was welcomed with surprise and, eventually, controversy. The Premier League’s inquiry found that Tevez and Mascherano were partially controlled by Media Sports Investment, a business linked to agent Kia Joorabchian. This arrangement violates league rules.

Following a two-day hearing, the independent commission found against West Ham and imposed a substantial fine. However, the club chose not to file an appeal, presumably preferring to continue forward.

Despite the fine, West Ham avoided a potentially crippling point deduction. This, together with Tevez’s key goals in the closing stages of the season, ensured them Premier League status. Tevez has seven goals in the last 10 games, including the winner against Manchester United that ensured their safety.

West Ham’s relegation-threatened rivals, particularly Sheffield United, who were relegated that season, were furious at the lack of a points deduction. Sheffield United even filed legal action, which was ultimately resolved out of court in 2009.

Both Tevez and Mascherano’s time at West Ham was brief. Tevez joined Manchester United at the end of the season, and Mascherano had previously left for Liverpool in January 2007.
