French football expert rates chances of Sunderland hiring Will Still as next manager

The chances of Sunderland hiring Will Still as their next manager have now been rated by French football expert Jonathan Johnson.

Sunderland are on the hunt for their next manager and look set to make one in the coming weeks following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

The Black Cats’ season came to an end at the Stadium of Light when they lost 2-0 to Sheffield Wednesday. This result virtually ruled out Danny Rohl, the Owls’ manager, making a summer transfer.

However, since then, Liam Rosenior and long-term target Still have both left Hull City, with Marco Gabbiadini believing the former Derby County manager would be a good match at Sunderland.

However, he still appears to be the front-runner, and his prospects of succeeding Sunderland as manager have now been assessed.

Sunderland chances of appointing Will Still as next manager

Speaking to Sunderland Echo, French football expert Johnson has given his verdict on Still’s Reims exit and the probability of him heading to Sunderland this summer.

He said: “It would not surprise me if it was revisited but Still will likely have quite a few suitors.

“I think that he will be frustrated that West Ham United are unlikely to be one of those clubs but there are some potentially interesting landing spots for him and he will undoubtedly feel happy that he potentially has a full pre-season ahead of him – assuming he does get a new gig immediately.

“Sunderland will need to present him with an attractive project, but I stand by what I said earlier about the makeup of the squad being a good blend for him given some of the French speakers currently on the books.”

The main challenge facing Will Still amid Sunderland rumours

Owner of Sunderland Kyril Louis-Dreyfus seems to like Still, and many fans want Still to take over as the team’s next manager.

However, as we’ve already seen with Rosenior’s departure from Hull City and the quick (though internet) rumors connecting him to the Sunderland position, things aren’t looking well for him.

It seems logical that Sunderland is taking their time, as many teams make managerial changes at this time of year, opening up positions for new hires.

It remains to be seen if Rosenior is a person of interest. However, it makes sense on paper, and he has the crucial Championship experience that Still lacks.

He may still be hoping that he gets the go-ahead to accept the Sunderland position and that no other qualified managers become available in the upcoming weeks.

However, as Johnson points out, considering Still’s age and linguistic abilities, Sunderland does appear like a suitable fit for him. He is also a long-term objective for the team, as he is currently a free agent.

It might not be long until Still gets a job at Sunderland.
