Ruthless from the Black Cats.
Sunderland’s poor season in the Championship has prompted the club to take decisive action ahead of the summer transfer market.
Sunderland transfer news
The Black Cats should prioritise finding a permanent manager after Mike Dodds’ interim tenure ends. After everything that went wrong with Michael Beale’s appointment, they need to make the correct decision. Sunderland has regretted the move ever since, and they are in desperate need of a fresh start.
While it remains to be seen who will be the next manager in charge, talk has been rife around the likes of Paul Heckingbottom and even Jermain Defoe. It would be a surprising appointment to offer their former forward his first step into the management world. Will Still, who recently left Reims after a successful tenure, has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.
Whether it’s Defoe, Heckingbottom, Still, or another choice, Corry Evans will not be a part of the next era. According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Evans has been released from Sunderland due to the club’s decision not to renew his contract, making him a free agent.
After Sunderland removed Evans’ alleged pay of £6,400 per week, the 33-year-old will need to find a new task in the coming months. Ultimately, while looking back on his time at the Stadium of Light, Evans’ ACL injury will take the headlines, and he may be wondering what might have been if he hadn’t suffered such a big blow at such a critical moment last season.
Sunderland must replace Evans’ leadership
Evans may have struggled to play for Sunderland this season, but his leadership is a valuable attribute that will be hard to replace. The club captain’s departure will create a gaping hole that Luke O’Nien will have to fill, as he has throughout the current season, but that doesn’t mean the Black Cats should not look to the transfer market.
Sunderland is rumoured to be interested in signing Divin Mubama during the summer transfer season, potentially filling the wage gap left by Evans. The youthful West Ham United forward, like Evans, is scheduled to become a free agent at the conclusion of the season, potentially offering the Black Cats a discount contract.
It would be consistent with the club’s aim to welcome younger, fresher faces as those who appear to have reached their peak leave. And, as brutal as Evans’ departure may appear, and as tough as it will be to replace his leadership, Sunderland must return to the dynamic, courageous form that saw young players thrive last season.
