MotM Poll: Borussia Dortmund Charge Into the UEFA Champions League Final!

Borussia Dortmund faced an uphill battle in this Champions League campaign, being drawn into the “Group of Death,” with most pundits believing BVB to be the worst of the four teams. But that didn’t stop Dortmund as they won their

group, defeating Newcastle twice and AC Milan once. BVB did not, however, defeat PSG in the group despite performing better overall. Then it was a tough tie against PSV Eindhoven- 3-1, done and dusted. Next up was a difficult Atlético Madrid side, but Borussia Dortmund fought hard over two legs, edging out the Spanish side 4-3 on aggregate. Then came today’s rematch with Paris Saint Germain, and heavily favored French club bankrolled by Qatar. The media was sure BVB would bow out after their unexpected run to the semifinals. Yet to their surprise, Dortmund scored twice and maintained two clean sheets in the process against the French giants. Edin Terzic got the tactics right again, and now a date with destiny awaits. Now, speaking of those clean sheets:

Our picks for Man of the Match:

Mats Hummels

He was responsible for the only goal of the match- it had to be Mats Hummels, the only player in Dortmund’s Starting XI who also started in the 2013 UCL Final. In addition to his attacking exploit, Hummels was constantly clearing the balls and picking the pocket of any attacking player who came near him.

Nico Schlotterbeck

Schlotti was all over the defense and his positioning was brilliant. He won several ground duals and maintained a strong composure when defending the ball. He also produced several passes into the final third, and created counter attacks with his accurate long ball passes. Nico and Mats should certainly be considered as Germany’s preferred pairing this summer.

Julian Brandt

Julian Brandt played a vital roll in transition play, changing the pace of this game on multiple occasions. His overall game was sharp, as were his corner kicks, one of which resulted in Mats Hummels’ goal. With the squad struggling for possession, Bradnt’s accurate passing was a boon

Julian Ryerson

Heading into this tie, the question was asked: how do we stop Kylian Mbappé? The answer: Julian Ryerson. Mbappê is good, but Ryerson was on the whole game, making his life extremely difficult on the wing. Ryerson used his pace to cover Fabian Ruiz and Gonzalo Ramos at times as well, without ever drifting too far out of position.
