Newcastle United’s search for a new sporting director is now down to two candidates.

The Magpies are now without a sporting director, as Dan Ashworth is on gardening leave before joining Manchester United. The Red Devils have snatched him but have yet to reach an agreement with the Magpies on compensation.

The transfer of Ashworth to Manchester United has created a scandal, as Newcastle United is looking for a successor.

Newcastle have looked at a lot of sporting director candidates

The club has been associated with some fascinating names during this search, with Paolo Maldini being considered as a viable possibility. He obviously has an eye for quality; after all, he was the one attempting to persuade Sven Botman to join for AC Milan rather than Newcastle.

Hugo Viana, a former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, and Paul Mitchell have also been linked.Although Geordie Boot Boys has expressed interest in the post at St James’ Park, a recent report from TalkSPORT claims he may not be in the running.

Dougie Freedman still in the race for Newcastle role

According to TalkSPORT, Newcastle’s search for a replacement for Dan Ashworth behind the scenes at St James’ Park has narrowed down to only two applicants.

They claim Dougie Freedman is one of the remaining contenders, having surfaced as a target late last month. Crystal Palace has already begun hunting for a replacement, just in case.

According to TalkSPORT, Newcastle is also exploring an overseas candidate, implying that Mitchell is no longer a contender. That comes as a surprise given that he was one of the leading candidates for the role.

Freedman’s talents were clear for all to see on Monday night

While Mitchell appears to be out of the race, Freedman remains in contention. And Monday night provided as a reminder of what the Crystal Palace manager can bring to St James’ Park.

The Eagles defeated Manchester United 4-0 at Selhurst Park, a victory that might significantly help Newcastle qualify for Europe.

Palace were spurred by Michael Olise, who scored a brace just hours after being linked with a move to Newcastle. The 22-year-old is one of Freedman’s best signings, and Eberechi Eze is also a contender.

In fact, Jamie Carragher stated on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football that Freedman is a ‘absolute maestro’ when it comes to signing players from lower divisions.

That could appeal to Newcastle, which wants to sign talents like Olise and Eze before they reach their full potential. This will allow the team to conserve money, which is critical in the era of PSR.

Freedman may help Newcastle accomplish just that while he waits to see if he is the guy PIF and company want to replace Dan Ashworth.
