£30m ex-Sunderland man Pickford wanted by Chelsea amid financial uncertainty at Premier League club

The former Sunderland player is allegedly on the radar of Chelsea should Everton’s finances worsen.

Everton may be forced to trade former Sunderland custodian Jordan Pickford, according to reports.

Pickford, who was born in Washington, began his career with Sunderland, progressing through the Academy of Light to the first team via various loan transfers, including a successful stint at Preston North End during the 2015-16 season.

The Wearsiders were then demoted to League One in 2017, forcing Pickford’s move to Goodison Park to join Everton for a fee that may reach £30 million if various add-ons and criteria are met.

The 30-year-old England international has now been at Goodison Park for seven seasons, assisting Sean Dyche’s team to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season with games to spare despite a significant points deduction.

Jordan Pickford: Everton have turned a corner – we'll go after City

According to talkSPORT, if Everton’s proposed takeover proposal fails, the club may be obliged to trade Pickford. The Toffees have borrowed £16 million from prospective new owners 777 Partners to cover their latest payroll bill. The club has now borrowed a total of £200 million from the Miami-based investment group.

However, there are considerable concerns that 777 Partners’ takeover of Everton may fail or be rejected by the Premier League’s fit and proper persons criteria, given that the company was recently implicated in 16 unpaid debt litigation. According to talkSPORT, Pickford is Everton’s most valued asset and might be a target for Chelsea if the club is forced to sell.

Pickford has maintained 75 clean sheets in 276 games for the club throughout his seven-season tenure, and he has been instrumental in the club’s three Premier League survivals.
