Everton’s efforts to avoid the drop this season were heroic, and this squad deserves praise for their work in achieving that goal.
Sean Dyche may be proud of his team’s spirit in overcoming not only relegation rivals but also the Premier League.
During a fantastic week in which they won three consecutive games at Goodison Park, so many stars stood up at crucial moments.
Ashley Young was the surprise hero of that period, starting and starring in all three matches.
Ashley Young fires upbeat dig at Jamie Carragher
Young is not the first Everton player to feature on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football in recent years, and he will not be the last, but at 38, his career must be coming to an end.
He has been a genuine stalwart for practically every club he has played for over a long, trophy-laden career, and despite initial concerns about his quality, he has ultimately delivered for Everton when they needed him.
To appeal to Everton fans, he mocked his co-pundit Jamie Carragher when the Toffees defeated Liverpool last month.
He spoke on Sky Sports (18:34 pm): “We’re delighted to put the points on the board.” The week was great. We had just experienced a disappointing Chelsea game. That was how all of the guys felt.
‘We discussed it in-house and recognised what we needed to do. We needed to get wins on the board, and we did just that. It wasn’t easy; we had some tough games, but the triumph over Liverpool was tremendous. Jamie will not like that.
Carragher answered by joking that he will not mention ‘those penalties’, alluding to Everton’s contentious 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.
Ashley Young is on the wind-up again
In recent weeks, we’ve gained a better understanding of the 38-year-old Premier League veteran’s personality.
And it makes sense that it would only come out as Everton limped to safety, considering that fans would not have appreciated his comedy while the team was underperforming and he was struggling.
But it all began with the Forest game, which Carragher mentioned briefly following Young’s dig.
In a match that aroused widespread outrage and prompted a humiliating tweet from the visiting team, the Tricky Trees were denied three clear penalties at Goodison Park because, as they claimed, the VAR was a Luton Town fan.
Inexplicable, indeed, but funny for the Toffees, who drew further away from the drop zone.
Young’s calm demeanour in his interview demonstrated his unconcerned attitude towards the happenings.
After ensuring their safety, he responded to a random fan on X who had predicted their relegation.
A busy few weeks for the former Manchester United player.
