‘Massive gamble’ ‘Absolutely’: Sunderland fans deliver Will Still verdict after major development

The Echo asked Sunderland fans if they would be happy if Will Still became the club’s next head coach.

Sunderland’s hunt for a new head coach could take a dramatic turn after Will Still quit his role at French club Reims, and the Echo has polled supporters for their opinions.

In December, the 31-year-old was considered for Sunderland’s head coaching position, but the Black Cats would have had to pay a high compensation price. Still has expressed a desire to coach in the UK, but it’s unclear if he is still a contender for the Stadium of Light job.

After Still assumed leadership of Reims at the end of 2022, the club went on a 19-game undefeated streak before finishing 11th in Ligue 1. Reims then made a strong start to the 2023/24 season, but have dropped to 11th place after winning only one of their past eight league games.

We asked Sunderland fans on the Echo’s social media channels if they would be delighted if Still became the club’s new head coach. Below are some of the responses we received:

On Facebook, Bill Aitken stated, “Yes, but don’t expect a messiah.” Reims is currently in the middle of the table, with 11 wins from 31 games this season. They were thrashed 4-1 by the league’s worst team on Sunday.”

Brian Simpson responded, “Absolutely 100%”

Len Hanson wrote, “Steve Cooper would be my number one.”

Cyril Brown said, “I don’t know what he’s really done to get excited about.”

Steve Mcghin added, “Whoever we choose, let’s rally behind them and offer them some support so they can have a shot. We can’t do worse than Beale, can we?

David Feetham responded: “I don’t think he’s the answer we’re searching for. Need someone with some experience in the Championship and promotion.”

John Harvey agreed, saying, “Not a chance; his last ten games prove it.”

Wayne Cairns commented: “He needs to bring his own staff in though.”

On X, @flash1879 stated, “It is a massive gamble, and I am not sure we are in a position to take such a gamble.”
