The confirmed match officials for Saturday’s Premier League encounter between Burnley and Newcastle United at Turf Moor are set for 3 p.m. kickoff. This is referee Anthony Taylor’s fourth Newcastle match of the year. Penalty decisions in all three of the prior games have been controversial.

When Eddie Howe’s team defeated Nottingham Forest 3-2 in February, Taylor was the manager of that match. With the score at 2-2, Taiwo Awoniyi went down under challenges from Sven Botman and Martin Dubravka, but the hosts were not awarded a penalty.

Before VAR upheld the original ruling not to award a spot kick, the referee dismissed Forest’s appeals. Following the game, Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo stated, “We should have had a penalty.” I repeatedly watched the replay.

It’s really evident when you watch it on VAR, which is why I don’t understand [the judgment]. We had two opportunities to come back from behind and take the lead, so I believe that this was the pivotal moment. That was undoubtedly a pivotal time.

Following a push from goalie Martin Dubravka, Diogo Jota went down inside the penalty area, prompting Taylor to give Liverpool a penalty on New Year’s Day at Anfield. Even though Newcastle was defeated handily that night, the decision to give the penalty was criticized since Jota was thought to have conceded the goal with ease.

Furthermore, in the 2-2 draw between Newcastle and Wolverhampton Wanderers in October of last year, Taylor gave Newcastle a penalty kick after it was determined that Hwang Hee-chan had fouled Fabian Schar inside the box. Although Callum Wilson scored the penalty, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil criticized the “abysmal” call made after the game.

Gary Beswick, Adam Nunn, and Tom Bramall will support Taylor, with Tom Bramall serving as the fourth official. John Brooks, with assistance from Nick Greenhalgh, will serve as the match’s VAR.

With four games left in the Premier League season, Newcastle is presently ranked eighth, while Burnley is ranked second from the bottom, two points from safety with three games left. The goals of Miguel Almiron and Alexander Isak helped the Magpies defeat Burnley 2-0 at St. James’ Park earlier in the season, but they have only won four of their league away games this year.
