Referee Marco Guida was dubbed “dreadful” by Aston Villa fans for ruling out Leon Bailey’s first-half goal against Olympiakos on Thursday (2 May).
The Italian official ruled that Villa defender Clement Lenglet committed an off-the-ball foul before to the Jamaican international’s goal.
It would have given Unai Emery’s team the lead in the Europa Conference League semi-final, with a swift VAR review supporting the on-field decision to rule out the goal.
Following that event, the Greeks took the lead through Ayoub El Kaabi, who went on to score a hat trick for the visitors.
The Villans’ Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby both scored, but it was insufficient to secure a victory as they were defeated 4-2 by Olympiakos after Santiago Hezze’s fourth goal.

It could have been quite different if Bailey’s early goal had counted, with one Villa supporter calling it a “poor” decision to foul Lenglet.
