Declan Rice makes astonishing claim about his role at West Ham

Declan Rice, a midfielder for Arsenal, has revealed something really unexpected regarding his position at West Ham United.

In the summer of 2023, Declan Rice signed a £105 million contract to join our London rivals Arsenal, leaving West Ham United.

The Hammers supporters will not be surprised by the 25-year-old’s remarkable success with the Gunners, as they have saw him develop both as a player and a guy over the previous four or five years.

Because of Rice’s significant contribution to Arsenal’s 2023–24 campaign, the team is well-positioned to win the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

This season, the potent midfielder has demonstrated a lot more attacking threat while playing for the Gunners.

In 35 Premier League games for Arsenal thus far, he has eight assists and six goals, which is eight more goals than he had during his greatest season with the Hammers (Transfermarkt).

If not the greatest box-to-box centre midfield player in the game of football, Rice is without a doubt one of the best.

And now he’s revealed what David Moyes wanted him to do when he was at West Ham.

Speaking to The Athletic, Rice answered this question on his job under Moyes at the London Stadium:

“Last year, I was playing so many passes at West Ham.” However, it was our manner. I used to adore dropping into “false full-back” (left) positions for Moyes because it allowed me to cut inside and hit the other side. As the graph illustrates, there are a lot of passes that go to the right, which was a major issue for myself, Vladimir Coufal, and Jarrod Bowen, who have that relationship where, if I receive it, Coufal goes. I used to frequently strike that zone.

In other words, Moyes effectively instructed one of the Premier League’s greatest and most athletic centre midfielders to play as a “false left-back”!

Amazing, amazing, amazing.

Declan Rice, as good as he was for West Ham, has undoubtedly gotten better at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta.

Dec’s revelation was shocking to hear, and it has really irritated me since I think Moyes could have used him much more effectively.
